The Consortium for Undergraduate STEM Success (CUSTEMS) is a collaboration of post-secondary institutions interested addressing issues relating to undergraduate degree completion in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, with particular focus on under-represented students. CUSTEMS combines student academic data from participating institutions with survey responses from those same students to inform institutions about patterns of student migration into and out of STEM fields.
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has provided funding to establish the collaborative group, create data capture instruments and processes, and build an enduring data capture, storage, and reporting system. The ability to track data over time will allow departments, colleges, and universities to "close the loop" in their assessments, and to continue to make adjustments and monitor for improvement. This information will help institutions make informed decisions regarding programmatic offerings, respond to accreditation requirements, and formulate funding requests.
CUSTEMS builds on a Sloan-funded Pilot Project carried out in 2007-2009 by Washington University in St. Louis and Swarthmore College involving nine to eleven (depending on the portion of the work) public universities, private universities, and small liberal arts colleges. CUSTEMS will further develop, refine, and standardize the primary project components defined by the Pilot Project.
